Poor design and expensive - David Sonnen - WA
I bought this coffee maker hoping that the Cuisinart brand meant good quality and design. The device does make good coffee, but the stainless carafe drips -- a lot. Apparently, the plastic rim around the top of the carafe causes coffee to spill. I've taken to pouring coffee over the kitchen sink, so I don't have to spend as much time cleaning up. You can spend much less and get a coffee maker that is just as good and less of a hassle to use. I'm going back to my faithful and dripless Mr. Coffee.

Everything that has been written about this product is accurate from my experience:

Pros:
-Cheap
-Small footprint
-Makes coffee fast

Cons:
-This product is discontinued (as I found out when I called Cuisinart regarding the next point)
-The plastic part of the carafe is poorly made, so a week after I purchased it, the lid started to leak, which leads to the messy counter issues when pouring that everyone is complaining about in the reviews
-Poor design: the steam from the spout could burn you as you are pouring a cup due to the angle it's at.

I'm surprised Cuisinart has not recalled this product, it actually seems like a hazard and potential lawsuit.

This is a great coffee maker overall. I'd love to see a stainless holding tank for the coffee in the next generation. It's certainly convenient! Just load the coffee maker with water, looking at the convenient gauge on the side for the right level. A little trick that many people do not seem to understand is that the coffee reservoir pulls out and doubles as a water pitcher. See the pouring spout? Yep, that's it! Add your basket (which takes a normal #4 filter), coffee, and turn the left knob to 'brew'. Turn the right knob to 'on'. The Cuisinart beeps when the coffee is ready. Push the lever, and get your drink on! This coffee maker is fast, makes very good coffee, and keeps it hot without the burnt taste. Want it ready at a certain time? No problem. The clock is easy to set, the auto on works well. The empty/full gauge is a very appealing feature.

We like this model because we are lazy and always asking our kids to pour us a refill. This way they don't have to pick up a glass carafe and pour and put back on a burner. Also, it doesn't have that "sat on the burner too long" taste to it. When filling the reservoir, we use tap water from the sink via the squirter, right into the little hole. Clearly, we are not coffee purists, but it tastes like a good cup to us.

I've had this style of coffee maker for almost two years now. Despite the fact that it just died from causes unknown, I'd suggest this item to those who do not like the burnt taste that most coffee makers leave behind after a short time. (I'm ordering a new one!) I've experimented with many brands, sizes, & types and this one rules. There are a few drawbacks. The water spillage issue that one reviewer mentioned is true, however I figured out what it took after a few pots. The amount of space given for cups does not allow you to fill large cups, travel mugs, or carafes easily. You must remove the drip tray for that function. Lastly, I think cuisinart would do well to add a light near the cup area because I've found that you cannot see the fluid level early in the morning when the lights are low. But that is just me.

Wow. I have used a variety of coffee makers over the years. I like the design and *intended* function, but it fails on so many levels.

A quick look and you can see where to pour the water. However, if you don't pour fast enough, the spout doesn't enable enough surface tension and water flows down the side of the bucket. The spout and reservoir opening are roughly the same size.

Meanwhile, you must keep an eye on where you're pouring into the top, as well as the fill-level guide on the side of the unit. Water isn't supposed to get into the area with the heating element, so the other option is the counter. Having to keep track of everything while still half-asleep is cruel and unusual. It may have a programmable bit, but I like my coffee fresh, not sitting out overnight waiting.

What happened to putting level indication inside the bucket one is supposed to use to fill the reservoir? This would be very handy. This is also kind of a 'duh' considering that the capacity of this bucket is far greater than that of the reservoir and it states that in the manual.

The condensation that forms from brewing will also flow out the back, even though there seems to be some sort of proto-gutter in place to divert the flow. I think it doesn't know it's supposed to do this.

And great coffee with the proper balance of clean, fresh water makes great coffee. Coffee makers do little more than throw hot water over a pile of grounds and store the brewed goodness. Stop kidding yourselves.

Can't decide if Cuisinart was trying to save money by hiring industrial designers fresh out of school or if they are a cult of sadists who enjoy torturing people in the early morning. I returned it and got a completely different manufacturer.

I've had this product for two years now and it still brews a great cup off coffee. I agree with the other reviewers about the spillage. I finally just gave up and I use a plastic cup to fill the reservoir with water instead of the carafe. I use bottled water because our tap water makes the coffee taste gross. When I pour my coffee, I pour it slowly and keep a paper towel handy. I am actually looking to buy one for my office but I was surprised to see that the retail price is almost double what I paid for mine! I will be shopping for a used one.

The total volume is 16 ounces (two cups). This is okay. I don't like drinking old over-warmed coffee, anyway.

The automatic shutoff doesn't allow for over-warmed coffee or burned out elements. The stainless steel carafe means less glass carafe breakage and replacement hassle. I have had it for just a coupe weeks.

Even though the plastic lid over the pot seems a little fragile and a little complicated, the DCC "4"-Cup is a good value.

My problem with this unit is it's unreliability. I love the concept, and when it works - this thing is the best coffee maker I've ever owned. Unfortunately I've now gone through 2 of them. Each time they just stop working. I'm guessing it's electrical - either a switch, or something with the heater. It's too much of a pain to send it back to get serviced. I hoped my first one was a lemming, but my second one has just done the same thing. Googling I found this is a common issue. Shame - if they could solve that, this thing would be unbeatable.

I ordered this because I don't have a lot of counter space in my apartment and I've never been able to measure out the right amount of coffee to make a good-tasting cup. This maker is perfect! I ordered flavored pods separately, but I used the regular pods that came with the maker until they arrived. The pods that come with the machine have a great flavor! The coffee wasn't too strong and it wasn't too weak. For the first time in my life, I'm consistently making coffee that tastes good! My boyfriend really likes the coffee maker, too. We use bigger mugs and the amount of coffee that comes out is perfect to add milk and not overflow the mug.

The maker arrived very quickly and the seller was great! I would definitely buy their pods when I run out of my 50 regular ones! I'm going to try to convince the office manager at my job to buy one for the office!

2 cup option doesn't work - coffee drinker -
I bought this coffee maker because 1) the cost of pods are less than K-cups, 2) Cuisinart typically makes a good product and 3) it makes two cups of coffee at the same time.

Unfortunately the coffee maker cannot produce two cups simultaneously as it advertises. One cup always came out with more coffee than the other making one cup weak (and overflowing) and one cup strong (with not enough coffee). It would have been better if the brew time was faster too.

FINALLY, A WHITE COFFEE MAKER for the 90% of kitchens with white appliances that does everything well. The only thing to even think about is that the interior lid stays moist because it makes such a great seal when working. You get: Hot coffee, brewed completely, minimum shrinkage of liquid from fill to finish, a LARGE fill port, a pot that doesn't drip...really, an easily removed cone that sits tightly, an outside fill gage you can read, and a positive auto off and on. Even the control knob and buttons have a positive feel. The only difference between this model 1100 and the upgrade? 1200 is the ability to control the temp on the hotplate. If that is worth 0+ to you, go for it. This one just makes hot coffee ready to drink as soon as there is enough to sneak a cup early, and then keeps it hot for 2 hours without burn. I read the reviews of others and have decided the complainers are professional whiners. I wonder who ties their shoes for them. IT IS A COFFEE MAKER THAT MAKES GREAT COFFEE at a price that is a steal--HELLO?

One thing I've read is some people's trouble filling it with water. No problems, here. The reservoir may have a smaller opening than other machines, but we don't have any problem with it.

Also, no problem with the pot dribbling when you pour. If you try to pour fast, sure it's going to drip. Pour at a normal pace and you're fine.

Programming is easy. Having the 1-4 cup setting is nice for times you're making coffee for 1 person.

My only complaint (it's a small one) is the cord could be 1 ft longer. This would allow us to put it elsewhere on our counter so we could leave the lid open after emptying the coffee so the insides can air dry.

I just ordered our third DGB for a mere . After reading product reviews of the new Burr Grind and Brew, I opted to stick with our tried-and-true white DGB.

I bought our first 2 DGBs together. They were reconditioned by Cuisinart, and cost me only and , shipping included, through the Amazon Outlet store.

I ruined the first unit by trying to remove coffee/bean staining on the water reservoir by using diluted Pine-Sol. I should have known better (note: pine oil stays in plastic. Taste and odor both). I kept all parts:
carafe, filter basket, grinding cover and unit cover so have used our second unit, with interchangable parts (we rinse and put them in the dishwasher daily) every day. The brew n pause feature is beginning to not work as well and has leaked the last two mornings. Other than that, the unit still works fine.

I orderd this third unit because I see this model is discontinued now.

Pros:
Great, very inexpensive unit. Not difficult to clean any more than any other kitchen item. This unit comes with a gold filter I just noticed, which we just bought..so we'll have an extra. Temperature control feature is handy. We roast our own beans now (organic only costs us /pound) and I can't get better coffee from any retail coffee brewer. This is the way to go if you love the best coffee--coffee at home that you brew yourself.

Cons:
Plastic parts seem to fail after a while, as in the brew and pause feature. It's possible we may have lost a spring or part, but they all appear to be there. We use our coffeemaker daily and twice during the holidays.

Note: the grinding noise is a bit noisy, but not one I mind at all. Hearing the grinder go off at 6am each morning to me is a sound I love: I know my coffee will be ready for me when I wake up. Several seconds after the grinidng noise stops (about 12 seconds), I begin to be awakened by the glorious aroma of my fresh-roasted (by me), fresh ground and brewed (by Cuisinart) coffee. A great way to start the day.

We really love this coffeemaker. Have had it about a year and other than breaking a carafe have had no problems with it. Find it only takes a couple of minutes to clean and we are enjoying fresh tasting coffee every day which is better than we get in restaurants. Grinding the beans each time provides better taste than just using grounds. I also use it for making iced tea by putting the bags in the container and turning off the grind feature. I add water to the concentrated 12 cup brew and end up with a gallon of great tea.

Coffeemaker worked well, but the lid keeps popping up and the machine stops when the lid is up. Sent item back the first time because the lid was broken. Next one was not broken, but won't stay shut. Would not buy a cuisinart again. Bought this for my son and his wife for Christmas. Not happy with it at all. I purchased a Cuisinart 2 yrs ago,also a grind and brew, and it quit working. Will not buy a Cuisinart coffeemaker again.

this coffeemaker was to replace one I had and loved, which has a little tab on the lid to make the "connections" so it brews the coffee. It was eagerly awaited (going to Dunkin Donuts was another layer of time in the morning! at the holidays! with snow!) and arrived earlier than promised by Amazon.
I unwrapped it, put the washable parts aside, and set it up...and the lid would not close. almost cried. went to Amazon.com for return protocols and wrapped it up the next morning (too upset that night!) and went to Macy's and checked the lid latch before bringing it to the register (this, the DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS, AT THE MALL, IN AN ICE STORM! how bad did I miss my coffeemaker???)
so, I do love this coffeemaker, as the one I got at Macy's was the same model (just was a bit less $ and mall avoiding at Amazon)
sorry Amazon! better Quality Control from wherever this came from would have been good. I don't blame Amazon...Cuisinart should probably make this important part a bit sturdier.

this is perfect. There is only one downside the compartment to pour the

I was skeptical because of the price, but this is wonderful for when you just want a couple of cups of coffee. It makes terrific tasting coffee and is backed by a great name. It is just a simple pot, nothing frilly, perfect. It is small, looks great on the counter. I would highly recommend it.

I totally agree with the reviewer who said it's trash but for a different reason. The pod holder is my issue. It's not even the right size/shape to hold the pod snugly. What ends up happening is that the water runs around the pod instead of through it. The coffee it "brews" doesn't even smell like coffee - imagine how it tastes! I tried using two pods to see if that worked and what a mess. Water was all over the place. This thing doesn't even deserve the one star rating I had to give it. I wish Amazon would allow zero stars as a rating.

I really wanted to like this product. It was a great fit on my counter without being in the way. Cuisinart is a good brand and I love the pots and pans that I've had for many years. I learned my lesson!

Please, please save the money and put it toward a brewer that works the way they're it's supposed to!

This is NOT a pressurized Espresso Machine, it is a miniature drip-style "Mr. Coffee" (except much worse) with 8 oz reservoir that makes colored water...you would do much better plopping a few pods (at considerable expense) into any Mr. Coffee machine, at least it has room for the water to sit with the coffee as it drips out.

There is no "Zero-Star" category...I would have returned it but it was not worth the bother. I cannot understand why anyone would actually like this machine unless they were used to and looking for colored water called "coffee" and did not mind wasting expensive pods in making it. The one I bought now resides in a landfill.

To advertise this machine as a "commercial coffee machine" is worth a lawsuit!

After reading too many reviews on KitchenAid, Mr. Coffee, & Cuisinart coffee makers, I decided to take a chance on this model. The coffee from this machine is fantastic! I used to always make coffee out of my Bodum 2 cup coffee press because I was convinced that the only way to get a great tasting cup of coffee was to use a coffee press. Boy, was I wrong! It was my boyfriend's idea to get a coffee maker & I'm glad I listened. The coffee doesn't have any bitterness or strange tastes that I would normally get from my old 4 cup Mr. Coffee. I'm sure this can also be attributed to the water filter & the gold-tone coffee filter included with the machine (which is also awesome because you don't have to buy it separately).

I've tried the programming feature & it works perfectly. It's probably not something you can just "figure out" but it wasn't difficult. I just had to take a few minutes to read the instructions. I was able to wake up to the wonderful smell of freshly brewed coffee & found that it's a great incentive to get out of bed on time (along with not being late for work).

A few downsides(as many have already mentioned): the water level indicator. Since you have to look at it from above the reservoir I can see how it may be difficult for shorter people (I'm pretty short at 5'3" but I don't have a problem with it). If you are not in a well lit area of the kitchen this may also cause a problem for you because it's hard to tell where the water level is.
Solution: use a liquid measuring cup when filling the reservoir & take note of how much water is required to make however much coffee you want to make.

Pouring the water using a regular cup will prove to be problematic because of the small opening of the water reservoir. Solution: Use a liquid measuring cup.

The other downside to it is that it is a little difficult to pour out of the thermal carafe, especially if you are only making a few cups of coffee. The last couple cups of coffee doesn't pour very easily because of the plastic lip around the top of the carafe.
Solution: take the lid off the carafe & pour.

As you can see there are some design issues that could be improved but it doesn't make the coffee maker bad (in my opinion). Bad tasting coffee will make a coffee maker bad & this one definitely does not produce bad tasting coffee. That's why it gets 5 stars from me.

This model makes good coffee and the thermal carafe keeps it hot for hours without cooking or burning the coffee. However, the unit is manufactured with cheap parts and will not last more than two years. There is an aluminum heating tube in the base of the unit that will corrode and start leaking. Besides creating a mess if you set it up on the timer overnight, there are also electrical circuits in the base that could short out. I contacted Cuisinart after my first unit failed and they promptly sent me a new one, but now that one has developed the same problem (2 units in less than four years). I also know people that had the same problem with the Grind-N-Brew models. Avoid the headaches and by avoiding this brand.

I'm pretty satisfied with this coffee maker. The whole point of the thermal carafe is to keep your coffee from being heated on a plate and developing that unpleasant off-taste and odor that old coffee gets. It is a MUST to pre-heat the carafe by filling it with hot water before you brew, it will keep your coffee acceptably hot (unless you like it scalding, which I don't) for hours. I made a pot of coffee at 7:30 AM and when I got around to cleaning it at 3:00, the coffee inside was still warm.

I like my coffee strong - I prefer over 2 tablespoons/5oz cup and that filter simply does not accept more than 15 tablespoons - don't try it! (If anyone knows how to take the lid apart to wash, please comment and tell me how). But I can make a solid 6 or 7 cups which is perfect for two people. If we have guests, I just make another pot.

Yes, it can be a little difficult to see how much water you're putting in, but I'm 5'5 and I can look into it from above and tell where the level is. A better idea, suggested by another reviewer, is to have a container for water that's pre-measured.

Tip:
Do a few self-clean cycles, then one plain brew with water/vinegar. It will help with the new-plastic smell

Bottom line:
It's a keeper

As others mentioned, this small coffee maker seemed ideal for those in the market for a 4-cup coffee maker......However, the design of the carafe missed a QC check or something. There is no excuse for putting a carafe out there that leaks a good cup of coffee when you try to pour it.

This product probably should have been recalled. Definitely avoid and I'd advise avoiding all Cuisinart coffee makers with a carafe that looks like this one as they definitely need to go back to the drawing board with these coffee makers.

Do not buy this. It is a worthless piece of junk. The carafe leaks coffee all over the counter. The auto shutoff is too short. I'd take it back, but I suspect they won't accept the pieces it's in now. Major mistake on my part, one I won't repeat. Don't buy this JUNK.

I got a Krups 4 cup coffee maker as a wedding gift, it lasted 15 years. After a couple cheap makers that lasted a year each, we thought we upgraded to this. Within 2 months the hot plate was rusting, now less than a year old, the hot plate has rusted through. For some reason, coffee doesn't all go into the pot. Some, just a little, runs down the side onto the hot plate. Unfortunately, it is enough to rust it. I also hate the way it pours. I now keep it over the sink, as some coffee always runs down the side and drips off the bottom when pouring. One star is a compliment, only because zero is not available.

For years I've been searching for the right coffee maker, and I've probably gone through a 1/2 dozen of the cheaper 20-> dollar range makers. I hate waiting for brewing, scalding coffee, and the overall degradation in brew quality as the makers age.

I read the reviews here and decided to take the plunge on a more expensive maker; and I'm quite pleased.

I know there are some reviews that it uses far too many beans. Which is probably true if you use a 1 to 1 setting for the beans to water. What I've found is that 8 or 10 cup setting on STRONG, with 12 cups of water produces an excellent cup of coffee. It also turns out I'm using let beans than I was when I was manually grinding it and setting coffee up for the morning. On 8 cups strong for 12 cups I get a 12oz bag of beans to last about a week.

The temperature of the coffee is just about perfect for me with some cream added; and a full pot of coffee takes <10 minutes to brew.

If you've been looking for a higher end pot and moving from the old standard, this one should make you happy.

This is the most frustrating coffeemaker I ever used. I paid the $$$ to get a mess-free way to grind directly to filter - sounds great. Doesn't work. The grinder gets clogged all the time - and the only way to know it has failed is when a pot of water - rather than coffee - is returned. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COFFEEMAKER!!

I had chosen this coffeemaker because of the design (goes with the other stainless kitchen appliances) and that it is made by Cuisinart, which I thought makes good appliances. This coffeemaker has worked "perfectly" for me only twice out of about 8 tries, after which I gave up. It's sitting (pretty) on my counter but will only be used as a back-up.

The carafe tends to dribble when the water is poured into the reservoir and when I pour the coffee! If you hold the carafe "just right" (I haven't quite figured out what that is) it won't dribble. Too much trouble! I want to just pour my coffee!!

Another drawback, IMO, is that the coffee basket is basically pointed so you can't set it on the counter to pour your coffee grounds into the filter because it tips onto its side. This is troublesome for me because I grind my beans and usually pour the grounds directly from the grinder. Twice I've had the grinds go over the sides of the filter and make a mess. I suppose I could've spooned the grinds in, but it's actually hard to spoon coffee grinds out of the grinder with the blade in the middle of things.

Another feature that's supposed to be an asset is that it automatically shuts off after 30 minutes. My pattern in the morning is to make coffee, take a shower, pour my first cup, do other things, and then come back for the 2nd cup, which I would like to be hot. Nope! This baby shuts off and the coffee cools down real fast!!

I have heard better reviews by friends of Mr. Coffees!!

I picked up this Cuisinart DCC-690 simply knowing that it wouldn't suck. For the (less-than) 0 I paid for it, I am quite happy with its performance. It is reliable thus far, the brew is decent, and my favorite thing is that the brewing/grinder assembly is fully washable.

A lot of folks don't know that coffee makers and mills NEED to be cleaned regularly for the purest flavor. I learned that from a friend that worked for a corporate coffee chain that begins with "S".

I appreciate that I can cleanse not only my coffee carafe and filter basket, as well as my grinder in the sink or dishwasher! You know that grimy grunge that forms in your coffee filter basket- even though you rinse it daily? Not tasty in my coffee! A bit disappointing is that one still has to wipe out the inside of the grinder/filter area once parts are removed. Not a big deal, but yeah, an extra step I could do without.

A grind and brew with a (vacuum) carafe, that would be a step up (to keep the coffee hot for longer periods). I don't like 'overcooked' coffee that's been on a burner for more than a few minutes. So, if you have a crowd or just one person, this unit works just fine.

I just purchased the Cuisinart Grind and Brew. The coffee really tastes great. The only problem that I have is that the unit must be cleaned after each use. Sure, it is easy to clean, but it does take more time than non-grind type units. Condensation forms in the grinding area, and the coffee grounds stick. Grounds also stick to the area where the coffee is blown into the filter.
Bottom line, the coffee is good. Just know that you have some cleaning to do. I think it is a flaw in the design. There is no where for the condensation to go from the heated water,so it forms in the grind area.

Mine fell apart too - real quick - efells - Somewhere in New Jersey
I had this mug in rotation with two others from different makers. It may have went through the dish washer (top shelf) three times in about a month and a half. The rubber bottom fell off. The inner cup seperated from the outer liner. I've tried to hot glue it back together with no luck. Definetly not worth the money. Incidently, the two other cups - one was a promotion item from a trade show, the other was a gift from Starbucks that came with a gift card. I've used the two other mugs, dishwasher and all and they have held up. Incidently. I bought the mug along with a Cuisinart Grind and Brew. now that is a great product!

My problem with this unit is it's unreliability. I love the concept, and when it works - this thing is the best coffee maker I've ever owned. Unfortunately I've now gone through 2 of them. Each time they just stop working. I'm guessing it's electrical - either a switch, or something with the heater. It's too much of a pain to send it back to get serviced. I hoped my first one was a lemming, but my second one has just done the same thing. Googling I found this is a common issue. Shame - if they could solve that, this thing would be unbeatable.

I have had my coffee maker for about 3 years and only use it a couple times a week, at most. It worked ok until recently, but now when you turn it on, most of the water leaks out the bottom making the little coffee it does make undrinkable. The bottom is getting rusty and basically the product is unusable now. I am looking into returning it, but from reading other posts and reviews, this will not be easy. I would suggest buying a different brand of coffee maker altogether!

A good machine with its own quirks. We "upgraded" from a Cuisinart DGB-300. My comparison of the 600 to the 300:
PROS: no hot plate in unit; we can put the thermos carafe on a tile on our breakfast table and not have to trek to the kitchen for a cup refill. Don't have to worry about the carafe breaking. Fits under our kitchen cabinets. CONS: cleaning parts is more of a chore than with the 300. A short person would have a problem in judging when he has poured the right amount of water in the tank.
EQUAL: Quality of brewed coffee.

I have had my Cuisinart thermal coffee maker for two years and love it. While some people have commented that the coffee maker is difficult to use, I have not found this to be the case. You just need to be sure that you have screwed on the lid to the carafe correctly, and there are directions on the lid to help you with this. My coffee stays hot for hours in the carafe. As far as customer service goes, I can't say enough about Cuisinart. I recently noticed that there were black flakes in my coffee. Upon further inspection, I found the black flakes appeared to be coming from the carafe. It appeared that there was a black lining in the carafe that was flaking off. I emailed customer support through the Cuisinart web site and describe the issue. Four days later I received a phone call from a Cuisinart service rep. She explained that the inside of the carafe is made of stainless steel and that the "black lining" I had described was actually coffee residue build-up. All I needed to do was run vinegar and water through the coffee maker and let it soak in the carafe. I was pleased to learn that my carafe was just dirty and was absolutely amazed by the fact that someone from Cuisinart actually called my house to tell me this!

This coffee maker is everything we expected (or hoped) it would be. It is rated as a 12 cup-er which means it delivers about seven normal mugs of coffee. The carafe keeps the coffee hot--in fact, much hotter than our previous coffee maker which had a heating element under the pot. Amazingly, the carafe will keep the coffee drinkable hot for up to two hours after it has been made.

Removal of, as well as the filling of, the basket is extremely easy, too.

The only drawback (if it can be considered a drawback) is that the complete unit is extremely tall. We had difficulty fitting it underneath the kitchen cabinet to keep it out-of-the-way.

We were unable to locate this item in any of our local stores--Macy's, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, etc etc--so we had to buy it sight-unseen from Amazon (see above concerning height) and were pleasantly surprised.

The total volume is 16 ounces (two cups). This is okay. I don't like drinking old over-warmed coffee, anyway.

The automatic shutoff doesn't allow for over-warmed coffee or burned out elements. The stainless steel carafe means less glass carafe breakage and replacement hassle. I have had it for just a coupe weeks.

Even though the plastic lid over the pot seems a little fragile and a little complicated, the DCC "4"-Cup is a good value.

I purchased this machine after reading the reviews here and elsewhere; also, Consumer Reports rated it highest in a recent coffeemaker test. We bought it after our previous Mr. Coffee Coffeemaker bit the dust after 4 years of every day use.

In general I'm very pleased with this coffeemaker. The things other people report seem to be true as far as styling, ease of use, hotness of coffee, etc. I have a few minor hangups, though, that I didn't see reported elsewhere so I thought I'd list them below under "Cons".

Pros:
- Makes very hot coffee
- The brew time is fairly quick which is nice
- The buttons and functions are easy to navigate and use. Easy to set-up and I like the "switch" used to turn it off and on. Feels sturdy and like it will last a long time.
- Carafe coffee pouring is near perfect. No drips, perfect flow & stream of coffee. This seems minor but after using coffeemakers that spill the coffee everywhere as you're pouring, this is a huge deal.
- Machine looks great, very sleek and stylish and fits in well with a kitchen that has chrome appliances.

Cons:
- Seems to require a lot of coffee to make it strong enough for me. I have to do an additional 2-3 scoops of beans than my previous coffeemaker to get the same strength coffee. Going to have to budget more for beans. I'm concerned if I try to brew 12 cups there won't be room and it will be really weak. We'll see. As long as you use enough grounds, though, you can get it very strong. Don't buy a review that says you can "only get weak coffee"...you just have to be willing to use more of it.
- No external fill gauge. Looking at the gauge inside is difficult to see and get an exact amount of water.
- I wish the lid on the carafe came on and off easier (like with a hinge). You have to pop it off as a separate piece then fit it back on. My previous coffeemaker had a hinge and it was way better.
- No display backlight. This is extremely minor, but it would be nice if the clock had some sort of backlight. It's small and very difficult to see. I guess that's not that big of a deal as most people don't check the time on their coffeemakers, but when I'm actually trying to set the delay brew time I wish I could see it more easily.
- Only 3 settings for the plate warmer...would be nice if this were a dial with more options.

Most the "cons" are pretty minor...the additional amount of grinds required and external gauge are what drive me to drop 1 star on the rating. Nothing's perfect, though, and I think you'd be very happy with owning this machine.

Coffee is bland with an off flavor. Coffee is not hot. We have an older model Cuisinart thermal coffee maker that makes wonderful, hot coffee--the coffee stays hot all day. We wanted to upgrade to a smaller version 10 c. thermal coffeemaker and are really disappointed in this model. We would not recommend this model.

Frustrating! - Scott A. Marshall -
We had a bit smaller version of this for years and LOVED it!! This one looks prettier but it is harder to use. We always steamed milk right in our mug before but with this one it is almost impossible to do because it immediately foams over and makes a huge mess. It does not adjust to steam/froth so you just get froth! It drives me crazy! I would rather have the other Capresso that is a bit smaller but worked great. If you never steam milk I suppose the espresso part works fine. I don't like it :(

This is a fantastic coffee maker that makes great tasting coffee but what if you are debating between this and an "all in one" unit that will grind your beans and brew your coffee at the same time (that I will refer to as a "Grind-N-Brew")? Below are my reasons for not giving into the "all in one gimmick":

1. Grind-N-Brew makers require just as much work as having a regular coffee maker and purchasing a separate grinder. When a grinder is built into the coffee maker, it tends to get wet from the steam each time you use it (unless the grinder is far enough away from the brewing portion of the machine. A few models do this but then some of them still have you manually transfer the grounds from one part of the machine to the next so what's the point?). Because the grinder get's wet from the steam, you have to clean it more often. Some models even require that you clean it after every brew!

2. With a separate grinder, you can grind the beans the night before (when you set the coffee maker) so there is less noise in the morning to wake you up.

3. This maker has a cone shaped filter instead of the bucket shaped ones that tend to come with the Grind-N-Brew models I've found (not sure why this is).

4. With a separate grinder, you can get better quality grinding. Seems like the built in grinders that I saw in the stores were a little on the dull side like it would make pretty course grounds (?).

5. Some Grind-N-Brew models pre-determine how much grounds you will use but if you buy a separate grinder, you can determine how strong you want your coffee.

WHY CHOOSE THIS SPECIFIC BREW-ONLY COFFEE MAKER MODEL:

Because it makes fantastic tasting coffee and, for the price, it feels solid, looks great, and is of good quality (compared to other makers I've seen for the same price). To me, the coffee tastes like I went to a coffee shop everytime I use it. It has a warming plate (and you can set it to high/medium/low). It also has a cleaning feature (which I thought was pointless until I found that it will actually alert you if it is STILL dirty after you've cleaned it (meaning you haven't cleaned it enough) which might be a neat idea. You can also set it to shut off after 1-4 hours and it has a 1-4 cup setting (which will heat the coffee up more then normal since you're making a smaller cup). The coffee is hot (burnt my mouth the first time) and tastes great.

MINOR FLAWS:

1) Yes, with this model (and many other Cuisinart models), there is the issue of the 5 beeps that it makes when it completes the brewing cycle. It's not terrible unless you are sleeping in the room. The beeps sound like a generic wrist watch alarm and you're microwave will probably make more noise then these beeps so it shouldn't really deter you from purchasing this unit unless you are a delicate sleeper or have a studio apartment...etc.).

2) No outside water meter (so you will want to just keep track of how much water you put into the unit-which could be a downside to the thermal carafe option). It is possible to tell how many cups of water there are inside the unit by looking down the well positioned in the back (it has a measure inside there) but who wants to do that-just measure beforehand.

3) Yes, the hole in the back to pour the water in is more on the small side (about the size of an orange, I guess), so you will probably want to have full access to the back of the machine (maybe be able to slide it away from a wall so you can fully open lid to the machine and get the carafe to pour the water well.

4) The carafe lid snaps on and off so everytime you want to rinse it and put water in it, you have to snap off the lid (not a huge deal but not as nice as the attached lids). I'm getting pretty good at flicking off the lid with my thumb. ;)

All in all, a great buy at a great price! I would highly recommend it for this price range.

We bought this coffee maker less than 2 years ago. For the past few months, we babysat it to restart it during the brew cycle. Now it is completely kaput. In researching other coffeemakers, I see that most manufacturers have at least 10 percent 1-star reviews, many because of the short lifespan of the product. After having a Braun coffee grinder for 25 years and prior coffee makers for at least 5, I expect more than a 2-year lifespan for something on which I spend nearly 0. We are going back to stovetop boiling and dripping into our own thermal carafe - no coffeemaker involved.
